History of the Group

The Southwell Scout Group was established in 1991 with the amalgamation of three groups – Higgins, Florey and Pinnacle. The Southwell name was selected as being representative of the new Group as this was the name of a rural property located within the Group's area. The name was officially adopted on Sunday 27 March 1994 and the Group was presented with its new Group tapes by Mr and Mrs Kings Southwell, direct descendents of the Southwell family who owned the property many years ago. The Southwell name brought with it a link with an Australian past and also to 1066 in England and a family coat of arms.

In a most gracious gesture Mr Kings Southwell gave his permission to use the Southwell family coat of arms on all items used by the Group such as letterhead, the honour board and the sign board on the front of the hall. The Southwell Scout Group is the first in the ACT, and perhaps Scouting in Australia, to have been so fortunate to have attained a history and identity.
